Hector Gottfried Masius was a 17^th-century German Lutheran author who was known for his works defending Lutheranism, religious philology, and attacks on paganism. One such work was ‘Historico-Philologicum’ a work in which Masius describes the history of idol worship, creation and destruction of idols, consulting oracles and future-seers, sorcery and witchcraft, and warnings against such behaviors to Slavs, Obotrites, and other Northern German tribes under the House of Mecklenburg.

 

This 1700 edition of Masius’ ‘Antiquitatum’ features a dissertation in the appendix entitled ‘The Existence of Demons’, a work that Masius originally published in 1682.
