“Corruptions in the Church are better amended, by living in the Communion of the Church; and there-by exhorting, admonishing, and shewing good example to reclaim. Thus the snake.”

― Joseph Wyeth, A Switch for the Snake

Joseph Wyeth was a controversial 17th-century Quaker writer. One of his most contentious works was ‘Anguis Flagellatus or a Switch for the Snake’ which was a reply to Charles Leslie’s ‘Snake in the Grass’. Leslie wrote one of the earliest attacks on Quakerism and it provoked many replies. Wyeth’s ‘Switch’ inspired more anti-Quaker responses including organized opposition to Quaker groups in Maryland. This first edition includes a supplement added by George Whitehead, a renowned Quaker preacher.

According to Brown and Bartlett,

“This volume relates to the controversy with William Penn, and the other Foxonian Quakers”
