“I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth.”

Ovid, Metamorphoses

Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ is one of the most famous works of Greek and Roman mythology and history of the 1st-century. It is known to have inspired the works of Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer, and even Shakespeare as well as works of visual art and music. This epic poem recounts the history of the world from creation to the death of Julius Caesar.

This 1698 Latin edition was published in London with commentary notes by Johannes Minellius. While working at the Erasmus School in Rotterdam, Minell sought to provide his students with explanations of popular classics. These explanations were published in many of these works as commentary, including this edition of Ovid.
