One of the most influential collections of emblems!

Cesare Rip was a 16th-century Italian emblematist known exclusively for his book ‘Iconologia’. This book was a highly influential emblem book which covered various allegories and icons of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman origin. Curiously, the earliest edition of Ripa’s masterpiece included no illustrations at all. Later editions were supplemented with woodcuts many of which were used in various teaching-art and allegory books.

This 1698 French edition was reissued from the original French of 1636 and features 82 full-page engravings depicting 476 emblems over the two volumes. An impressive work!
