Sir Walter Raleigh, a 16^th-century English explorer and writer, is most known for his South American voyage in hopes of discovering the ‘City of Gold’. While imprisoned for treason, he composed his famous book ‘History of the World’ – a historical view of the world with a heavy emphasis on geography. Even though the work was written as a history book, Raleigh intended to provide advice to King James I of England on how to handle his reign and his feelings toward princes.

 

This 1698 first edition ‘Abridgment’ was edited and gathered by Laurence Echard, a British historian. Other important aspects of this abridgment to Raleigh’s ‘History’ include:
