1698 1ed Old English Holy BIBLE Heptateuch Anglo-Saxon Old Testament Thwaites
An absolutely stunning and highly rare, 17th-century printing of an Anglo-Saxon Bible!
Known as ‘The Heptateuch’, which is the Pentateuch plus the books of Joshua and Judges, this Bible was collected and edited by Edward Thwaites. Thwaites, a prominent Oxford scholar, published this Bible and curiously included non-canonical books in this work including the Gospel of Nicodemus and a short fragment of the poem of ‘Judith’. These books were translated into Anglo-Saxon (or Old English) by Aelfric of Eynsham – overall, a very rare and desirable printing of the Bible.
This first edition was published 1698 Oxford and features a stunning, hand-colored frontispiece, as well as in-text vignettes and illustrated initials by Michael Burghers. This book is also believed to be one of the first pieces of Anglo-Saxon poetry to be published by an English press.
