A rare collection of ‘secret history’ letters on English royalty and the Stuart House

David Jones’s ‘Secret History of White-Hall’ is a detailed history of the House of Stuart, focusing primarily on the major events of the 17th-century. Jones recognized that the English public had a strong desire to understand the inner workings of the Stuarts and decided to capitalize on the taste for secret court memoirs, which had been largely censored prior to 1695.

This collection contained memoirs of various events such as the Sale of Dunkirk to Louis XIV, battles in the Anglo-Dutch War, and James II’s diplomacy in Flanders and Holland.

According to Snyder, these works were written in the form of letters written at Paris to a noble lord, a much-used device. Furthering on that, Bullard notes that ‘Secret History’

“…scrutinizes the conventions of secret history to provide an acute analysis of this form of historiography. Jones’s observations not only have a profound impact upon the relationship between secret history and the opposition to arbitrary government, but also prefigure some of the more audacious was in which the conventions of secret history are manipulated during the 18th-century. ‘Secret History of White-hall’ consists of a series of 131 letters sent to an unnamed English peer to a spy at the French Court.”
