1697 Moral Dangers of French MUSIC Opera & Theatre Comedy Ambroise Lalouette

 

Ambroise Lalouette was a 17^th-century French musician, writer, and chaplain whose commentary on French art songs were polarizing and unpopular. In his ‘Histoire de la Comedie et de l’Opera,’ Lalouette argues that French Airs ‘threatened the moral fabric of society.”

“one of the most disastrous effects of these songs is to place in the heart a very great disposition for crime and libertinism; with the result that those who love them and who make them their recreation, easily allow themselves to engage in disorder and impiety.” (Gordon-Siefert)

In other words, anyone who enjoys this art form is destined for sinfulness. Lalouette argues throughout this book that the result of enjoyment of theatrical comedies and opera, by default, causes those involved to sin. In May of 1694, the Sorbonne declared that opera was more morally dangerous than comedy thus prompting Lalouette to write this treatise, in which he declares both as perilous.
