1696 1ed HOMER Critical History Classical Greek Küster Rhapsody Illiad Odyssey
Ludolf Küster was a 17th-century scholar known for his studies on classical Greek texts such as Homer, Pythagoras, and Hesychius. In 1696, Küster published a critical edition of the history of Homer and his famed works. In this work, Küster offers commentary on Homer’s ‘Rhapsody’, ‘Illiad’, and ‘Odyssey’.
According to Levine on this work,
“Kuster’s first work was entitled ‘Historia Critical Homeri’ and was dedicated to the illustrious Ezechiel Spanheim. It was intended to bring together compactly all that was then known about Homer and his epic poems. Kuster began, therefore, by considering the problems of Homer’s biography, and he assembled the evidence for the rival claims of several Greek cities and the various dates proposed for the poet’s life… The work became standard and was reprinted frequently. It proved… it was very difficult to know anything certain about the life of Homer.”
