1695 HUGE FOLIOS Early Church History Eusebius Caesarea & Theodoret Cyrus Valois
Eusebius’s ‘Church History’ is considered the pioneering work on the history of the Church. He details the life of Jesus through Emperor Constantine’s military victories (ca. 325 AD).
An very rare 17th-century Latin edition of Eusebius’s ‘History of the Church’. Originally written in Greek, the Latin edition here is of Henry Valesius (Valois). Valesius was a fine editor of Greek literary works including Polybius, Socrates, and Theodoretus of Cyrus.
Theodoret of Cyrus was a 5th-century early Christian Church bishop. He played a critical role in many Byzantine controversies which led to various ecumenical acts and schisms. Theodoret’s ‘Ecclesiastical History’ deals with the rise of Arianism (mid-3rd-century AD) through the mid-5th-century. In this work, Theodoret expounds on major Arian controversies, church councils, and synods. It varied in style from other early church father’s histories in that it was much more concise, only using brief commentaries.
This impressive three-volume folio set includes Valois’s Latin translations of both Eusebius and Theodoret, published in 1695 by Henry Wetstein. An impressive set!
