Beginning in 1678, Anthony Wood, an English historian and expert on all things Oxford, began compiling a great and notable work on the history of Oxford, both the university and its surroundings. Wood was given access to the archives in Oxford University and much of what he found there was published in this work – ‘Athenae Oxoniensis’. He copied monument transcriptions and discovered previously unknown antiquities about Oxford, its scholars, and bishops.
Wood provides biographical sketches on hundreds of individuals whose names were associated with Oxford Cathedral and University.
