William Temple was a 17th-century English author who published a variety of works, most of which were essays on politics, historical perspectives of England, and memoirs. While most of his works were shorter pieces, one of his most substantial works was ‘Observations up the United Provinces of the Netherlands’. In this work, Temple describes the rise and progress of the Netherlands, government, culture and customs, religious preferences, trade, and commerce, as well as a commentary on their ultimate destruction in 1672 to war with France.

This book also includes a second edition of William Temple’s ‘Memoirs of What Past in Christendom’ – an account of the Franco-Dutch War and the third Anglo-Dutch War. Interestingly, this work was finished with the help of Jonathan Swift, Temple’s secretary at the time.
