“Manners maketh man”

– William of Wykeham (also, mottos of Wykeham establishments, Winchester College and New College Oxford)

William of Wykeham, 14th-century Bishop of Winchester, was an important figure in the history of education in England. His most significant contribution was founding New College in Oxford. This first edition in Latin of the life of Wykeham includes the arms of William of Wykeham to front the title page. It also includes an engraved genealogical table. First published in 1597, this ‘Life of Wykeham’ was written by Thomas Martin.

While William became most-remembered for his contributions to English higher education, he also made major contributions to architecture. While working for Edward III, he designed and help reconstruct Windsor Castle. He, there, developed a reputation for supervising various building jobs under the reign of Edward III. He rapidly rose in architectural prominence and was the lead surveyor over the building of Leeds Castle, Dover Castle, and Hadleigh Castle, in addition to many royal manors.
