1690 1ed John Dryden Don Sebastian English Theater Catholic Controversy Incest
“I have a soul that like an ample shield
Can take in all, and verge enough for more.”
– Dryden, Don Sebastian
Written in 1689 for the Theatre Royal in London, ‘Don Sebastian’ is one of John Dryden’s most successful plays, even after having taking a seven year hiatus from literary composition. Following the aftermath of the political upheaval and the overthrow of King James II during the Glorious Revolution in 1688, Dryden published ‘Don Sebastian’ to entertain the public.
However, this work was not without extreme controversy. Dryden included bizarre themes of incestuous relationships, references to Jacobite and Catholic feuds, political slander, and Laissez-faire religious devotion.
This 1890 first book edition was published in London by Hindmarsh. Very rare indeed!
