1689 Table of Cebes Stoic Philosophy Greek & Latin Cebetis Tabula Gronovius
A rare, late 17th-century printing of ‘The Table’ by ancient Greek philosopher Cebes. The original work, written during the time of Socrates, is a dialogue taking place in a temple between two individuals contemplating the representation of symbols and allegory in art found on a tablet. ‘Cebetis Tabula’, as it is known in Latin, uses Stoic influences and is typical of Hellenistic and Platonic morality.
This Latin edition was published by Henri Wetsten and was edited by the famous Dutch scholar Jacob Gronovius. Gronovius was known for his editions of classical authors such as Cicero and Livy.
