An impressive 17th-century printing of the French New Testament. This translation was based on the Clementine Vulgate furnished with notes by Denis Amelote. According to Darlow and Moule,

“Amelote (1606-78) was a bitter controversialist against the Jansenists. Annoyed by a satirical replay of P. Nicole, he used his influence to prevent the publication of the newly-completed Port Royal version of the New Testament, which consequently had to be printed outside France. He thus secured an open field for this annotated translation of the New Testament, prepared by himself, and published first in 1666, and again in 1681. According to this own statement, Amelote undertook this work at the request of the Archbishop of Toulouse and the Bishop of Montauban, who had been appointed by l’Assemblee generale du Clerge de France de l’an 1655’ to secure a fresh version. According to the Port-Royalists, confirmed by Sainte-Beuve, Ameote’s production is merely the Port Royal version, disguised by certain changes.”

This three-volume set is bound in two tomes – volume 1 dated 1688, volume 2 dated 1687, while volume 3 has only a half-title. It includes foot-notes, tables, and maps. Illustrations include a map of the Holy Land, Paul’s missionary journeys, folding views of the temple of Jerusalem, Herod’s temple, and the city of Jerusalem.
