1687 John Dryden Hind and Panther Masterpiece Church of England Protestant
“Either be wholly slaves, or wholly free.”
– John Dryden, The Hind and the Panther
John Dryden, a 17th-century English author, was known for his famous translations of Greek classics as well as his masterpiece poems including ‘The Hind and the Panther.’ ‘Hind’ is perhaps Dryden’s most famous and popular poem, however, it is without a doubt the most controversial as well. The completion of this poem coincided with Dryden’s conversion to Catholicism. In the three distinct parts, Dryden describes the different religious denominations in England, notably Protestant, Catholic, and Nonconformists. He also makes it clear as to what authority the church should have and where or not the English Crown and the Church should be united against Nonconformists.
‘Hind’ is notable for being the first instance of the phrase ‘blaze of glory’ which Dryden referred to the throne of God.
