He published a number of defense treatises including ‘Defense of New Christians and Missionaries in China, Japan and India’. This work was in response to his investment in controversies of Chinese rites and rituals and the Jesuit missionary practices of enculturation which was denounced by those opposed to the Society of Foreign Missions. This work was well known to be denounced and attacked by Jansenist Antoine Arnauld.
