“We carry within us the wonders we seek without us.”

― Thomas Browne

Sir Thomas Browne was a 17th-century English scholar known for his studies in science, medicine and especially theology. His most known work was ‘Religio Medici’, a controversial theological testament of psychology and philosophy. Browne uses scientific imagery to illustrated religious truths, something the Catholic Church highly disapproved of. Shortly after its authorized publication, it was immediately placed on the Prohibited Book Index. This book widely influenced authors such as Thomas de Quincey in his ‘Opium-Eater’ as well as physician William Osler who was known to have ‘memorized’ it! (Bliss, p. 45)

This 1686 English edition was the ‘first collected edition’ which features the following works:

  • ‘Enquiries into Vulgar and Common Errors”
  • “Religio Medici”
  • “Hydriotaphia; or Urn-Burial”
  • “Certain Miscellany Tracts”
