1685 Louis XIV French Military Conduct of Mars Huguenot Guerres Battle Tactics
La Conduite de Mars’, or ‘The Conduct of Mars’ is a late 17th-century military instructional manual written under the reign of Louis XIV. This work, written by Gatien Sandras, included marching orders and battle tactics, but also more direct instruction on behavior and expectations. Sandras describes notions that French officers would purposely ignore orders and become disobedient in order to engage in combat rather than stay at an assigned post. Proving one’s bravery was a common fault of French soldiers and Sandras sought to emphasize the importance of conduct.
According to Glozier and Onnekink, this text was a key military work that was heavily influenced by the Huguenots.
