“Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.”

― William Penn

In 1685, George Villiers, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, published a short political pamphlet on religious toleration. This tract, “A Short Discourse on the Reasonableness of Man’s Having a Religion,” was defended and promoted by William Penn, the father of Quakerism. According to Jones,

“The Duke’s discourse gave rise to a considerable controversy, which was comprised in political rather than theological pamphlets.”

An interesting view comes from Hume and Love in which they suspect that William Penn egged the Duke of Buckingham to write this pamphlet simply so that he could write his own response to it and defend it in his ‘Defense of Duke of Buckingham.’

While the author of this work is anonymous, many sources, including Wing, attribute it to William Penn.
