First published in 1597 under the title ‘Wits Theater of the Little World’, Robert Allott’s “Politeuphuia” is a collection of humorous maxims and anecdotes. This 1684 edition, attributed to both Allott and John Bodenham contains proverbs and aphorisms on a variety of topics including heaven and hell, angels, schools and government, and virtues and moral living. Many of the sayings and proverbs come from the world’s greatest philosophers and writers including Socrates, Ovid, Cicero, Erasmus, Pliny, Saint Augustine, Petrarch, Boethius, and many others.
