Edouard de La Croix (often Sieur) was a 17^th-century French diplomat known for his adventures in and studies of the Ottoman Empire. He served as a French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire until 1686 in which time he traveled throughout Turkish cities and villages, Constantinople and Smyrna assisting in political negotiations, being particularly influential in the Ottoman-Polish peace treaty. La Croix’s memoirs detail King Louis XIV’s attempts to gain favor with the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire as well as Croix’s own discoveries and experiences from Constantinople to Smyrna to Poland and Jerusalem and finally back to Paris.

This impressive 1684 first edition of Croix’s memoirs is incredibly rare.
