The best edition of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs!

“I am resolved to sacrifice everything in this transitory world, for the sake of salvation in a world that will last to eternity.”

― John Foxe, Foxe’s Book of Martyrs

A beautiful printing of John Foxe’s famous “Actes and Monuments”, or as it is more commonly known, “The Book of Martyrs”. Foxe began working on this landmark work in 1552. While in exile, in 1554, the first examples of this book were published in Latin focusing on the religious persecution of Lollards in England during the 1400s. However, the rest of his book was written in response to more persecution occurring throughout England.

This 1684 edition is considered the best edition by Lowndes. This third volume from this edition includes notable topics including:

  • Rise of Bloody Mary to the throne in England
    • Queen Mary’s letters to Bonner
  • ‘Disputations’ of Thomas Cranmer
  • The story and burning of Thomas Tomkins
  • Execution of Thomas Haukes
  • Public burnings of John Bland, John Frankesh, Nicholas Sheterden, and Humfrey Middleton in Canterbury
  • Deaths of Elizabeth Warne and George Tankerfield
  • Thomas Cranmer burned alive alongside William Seaman, and Thomas Hudson in Norwich
  • Details on the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre
