Jean de Thévenot was a 17th-century French voyager whose expeditions to the Middle East were extensively recorded in his travel journals. Beginning in 1655, Thevenot traveled throughout the Greek Isles, Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia spending large amounts of time in Palestine, Constantinople, and Egypt. His second voyage, which began in 1663, took him through the Holy Land and Mesopotamia, Persia, as well as through parts of modern day Iran and Iraq.

This 1682 Dutch edition of Thevenot’s second voyage is beautifully illustrated with impressive full-page hand-colored engravings of views of Middle Eastern city scenes, architecture, and festivals.

It is worth nothing though, that early French editions of this work included particular Americana interest, with the first printed account of Marquette and Joliet expeditions. (Sabin 95332). These early Thevenot editions are known to have price comparisons as high as $70,000.
