Francis Osborne was a 17th-century English essayist known for his “Advice to a Son”. Many of Osborne’s works were responses to or theories on politics and philosophy. In ‘Advice to a Son’, Osborne wrote a controversial warning against women in a provocative and atheistic manner. While the works of Osborne were popular quite popular amongst readers, not all critics felt the same. Samuel Johnson, for one, was less than impressed. According to Lowndes,

“[The Works of Osborne, 1673], frequently reprinted, are now in little estimation. The author, Dr. John styled ‘A Conceited fellow.’ Were a man to write so now, the boys would throw stones at him.”

This 1682 printing of “The Works of Francis Osborne” includes ‘Advice’ but also includes ‘Political Reflections of the Turks,’ ‘Memoirs of Queen Elizabeth and King James,’ and other miscellaneous essays and letters.
