1682 John Oldham Satire Against Jesuits Popish Plot Poetry English Poems Juvenal
“While some no other cause for life can give, but a dull habitude to live.”
– John Oldham, Memory of Norwent
John Oldham was a 17th-century English satirist and poet whose poems reflect the Satires of Juvenal. While in Surrey in 1679, Oldham composed his satirical poems against the Jesuits, a collection of short verses that were condescending and trite, written during a time when anger was readily stirred up against the Catholics for the ‘Popish Plot’.
According to Allibone,
“These satires form a very curious work, and contain an immense number of stories and allusions to the Golden League. Oldham, far superior [to other poets], ranks perhaps next to Dryden: he is spirited and pointed”
This book, published by Hindmarsh in London, includes four works by Oldham, each with separate titles. These works were printed and published as one (in 1684), rather than separately published then rebound.
