A rare, late 17th-century printing of two famed English philosophical essays by Joseph Glanvill and Dr. Henry More. These two English philosophers were known to have influenced each other on a variety of philosophical issues. Their works were often found published together as is the case with this 1682 printing of ‘Two Choice and Useful Treatises’. Glanvill’s ‘Lux Orientalis’ was his philosophical stance on the fundamental theories of the Anglican Church. It was written as a defense of More’s doctrine of ‘Preexistence of Souls’ (DNB XXI), and was notable for being included in a letter to Robert Boyle!

Dr. Henry More found himself in a number of controversial arguments with Robert Boyle mostly because he was interested in new forms of philosophical science and unfocused on the scientific evidences found by Boyle. His treatise ‘Discourse of Truth’ expresses many of these
