1682 ENGLISH Cosmography Peter Heylyn INDIAN Columbus America Voyage California
Peter Heylyn was a 17th-century English author who is best-known for his ‘Cosmographie’. Also known as ‘Microcosmos’, this work was Heylyn’s attempt to collect and describes details from every scholarly subject – geography and history, climate and nature, world cultures, politics and governments, and even religious beliefs. It is commonly believed that Heylyn was the first to publish geographical information on California, Australia and other portions of the Americas.
‘Microcosmos’ first appeared in 1621 and was published under the title ‘Cosmographie’ in 1652 after he decided to include geographical information of the whole world. Scholars believe that this book was one of the foundational books in naming Native American tribes as ‘Indians’, as well as providing details that established many of commonly understood tropes of Native Americans. An English translation of Heylyn on natives of Virginia:
“Their household stuff, a tobacco pipe, a wood dish, and an hatchet made of a broad flint; their weapons, bows and arrows, their arrows headed with the bones of fishes”.
Other notable topics include the voyages that led to the discovery of the New World (i.e. Columbus, Vespucci, etc.).
