Joseph Glanvill was a 17th-century English philosopher who was fascinated with existence of the spiritual world. In his book ‘Lux Orientalis’, Glanvill offered commentary on Origen’s doctrine of the pre-existence of souls (belief that a human soul exists before conception) – a doctrine of which the Church of England disapproved. Glanvill defended his reasoning for pre-existence mostly citing the goodness of God and the predisposal of sin in mankind. These principles outlined in ‘Lux Orientalis’ made it one of the best works on pre-existence particularly in a time when it was frowned upon by the Church.

This 1682 edition of Glanville’s ‘Lux Orientalis’ was published in London by Collins and Lowndes.
