In 1681, English agriculturist John Houghton collected and edited a number of letters, mostly by John Evelyn and John Worlidge, that focused on English trade and husbandry. These letters, which were simply entitled ‘A Collection of Letters for the Improvement of Husbandry and Trade’, described noticeable changes and adjustments occurring in English agriculture and farming. They also discussed matters of finance and money handling, poverty and beggars, and trade.
This first edition pamphlet includes the first letters of Houghton’s collection. These letters cover a variety of topics including:
- Gains from cole-seeding and clover grass
- Matters of trade, concerning money and bills, during war
- How to employ the poor and beggars, children
- Advantages of planting liquorice
