1681 1ed King James Charles I Frankland Annals anti Puritan Propaganda England
A rare first edition of Thomas Frankland’s ‘Annals of King James and King Charles’. According to Neufeld, this work is
“a collection of previously printed documents, arranged by Frankland to prove that puritan-Presbyterians were inveterate enemies of the Elizabethan framework of the Church, the Restoration religious settlement, and the established constitution. ‘Annals’ reiterated Peter Heylyn’s contention that the wars in Scotland and England could be traced to the adherents of Calvin’s reformation.”
Frankland’s ‘Annals’ was to blame for much of the animosity aimed at the English Parliament for the Civil Wars even though, it was “an exercise in preventative historical parallelism aimed at vindicating the Restoration settlement.” (Neufeld, 103ff).
