Antoine Dilly was a 17^th-century French author known solely for his book ‘On the Soul of Animals’. Dilly, a Jesuit priest, wrote on the theories of the animal machine, originally contrived by Rene Descartes. Descartes hypothesized that animal behaviors were compared to man-made machines in that animals were a collection of parts unable to think and make decisions on their own – unable to feel or have emotion.

 

Dilly expounds on Descartes’ theories in this book – a cornerstone in Age of Enlightenment philosophy.
