Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Olfert Dapper was an important 17th-century Dutch physician who made his name from his geography books, even though he never left the Netherlands. “Naukeurige beschryving van Asië” or ‘Description of Asia’ was Dapper’s attempt at describing the Middle East and Western Asia. He discusses important aspects of Arabs particularly their religious affiliations to Mahomet. He also covers cities and ports, trade and goods distributions, animals, cultural and social aspects, government and politics, and national alliances.

This 1680 Dutch edition is beautifully illustrated with 30 incredible copper engravings and maps. While all of the illustrations are stunning, the double-page city view of Nineveh is particularly desirable. Other nations described include Iraq, Assyria, Babylon, and Yemen. Special attention is paid to the botanical interests in these areas, including illustrations of indigenous plants and flowers.
