Unsure? Ask an Expert!

A highly rare 17th-century French Geneva New Testament Bible. This 1677 Bible was collected and edited by Weduwe van Jan Jacobsz and published in Amsterdam by Schippers. Like many Bibles from this era, both in French and in English, this example includes an edition of the Psalms of David; however, this French edition was translated by Clement Marot and Theodore Beza.

Marot, an early 16th-century poet, began working on his Psalms before moving to Geneva. Once in Geneva, Calvin became familiar with Marot and his Psalms which gave more prominence to the translation. These Psalms are considered some of the most desirable in the French language much in part to their influence on the Protestant Reformation in France. They were set to music and regularly sung in Protestant churches and were continually sung into the 20th-century in Protestant circles.
