1676 Jewish Astrology Mythology Kabbalah Michaelis Gaffarelli Curiosities Occult
Jacobi Gaffarelli was a 17th-century French priest who is known for his important representation of the Christian Kabbalah. During this time period, there was a growing interest amongst Christian scholars in the mystical aspects of the Jewish Kabbalah. Gaffarelli, and to an extent Gregorius Michaelis, tried to merge Jewish and Christian traditions. The result was Gaffarelli’s ‘Curiosities’. Michaelis created an attack on this book which defended that the Hebrew language was the one true language of God and the universe. Michaelis’s refutation of Gaffarelli was supported by the French government which had previously censored Gaffarelli’s original book.
This book includes aspects of ancient astrology and pagan rituals from Egyptian, Persian, and Arab cultures. It also paints a clear picture of Gaffarelli’s description of how Jewish astrology developed from star-gazing and Greek and Roman mythologies.
