“I myself have read the writings and teachings of the heretics, polluting my soul for a while with their abominable notions, though deriving this benefit: I was able to refute them for myself and loathe them even more.”

Eusebius, The Church History

Many historical accounts of the church have been written since the church began. None, though, seem to be as important or have had as long lasting of an impact as that of Eusebius. Eusebius’s ‘Church History’ is considered the pioneering work on the history of the Church. He details the life of Jesus through Emperor Constantine’s military victories (ca. 325 AD).

Another notable church history was written by 5th-century historian Socrates Scholasticus. Socrates’s ‘Historia’ covers the period of the church immediately following that of Eusebius, describing the events that would eventually lead to the Council of Chalcedon.

These church histories were edited and translated into French by Louis Cousin and published as part of a grand ‘History of the Church’ consisting of these two accounts as well as others. A rare 1675 first edition published in Paris.
