1672 John Selden Titles of Honor Heraldry Genealogy Persia Greek Rome Islam RARE
“Most men’s learning is nothing but History duly taken up. If I quote Tho. Aquinas for some Tenet, & believe it, because the school-men say so, that’s but History: few men make themselves masters of the things they write or speak.”
― John Selden, Table-Talk
John Selden is generally considered England’s first legal historian. He questioned all his contemporaries and their definition of ‘history.’ He spent time trying to discover history by researching the past, more so than that of his colleagues. He claimed, as seen in the quote above, that men of knowledge did not learn from the past, nor did they seek to discover the past. Selden sought to change this.
His book ‘Titles of Honor’ is a history of world kingdoms and the rise and fall of their rulers, kings, and emperors. Published in 1684, this edition includes impressive in-text engravings of these royal figures along with descriptions of popes, kings of Islamic empires, European gothic counts, and English dukes and kings.
