1672 1st ed John Pearson Vindiciae Epistolarum Defense of St Ignatius Epistles
Shortly after John Pearson’s ‘Vindiciae Epistolarum’ was published, he was named Bishop of Chester after already being considered one the greatest scholars of his day. ‘Vindiciae Epistolarum’ was Pearson’s most important work and, according to the DNB, is ‘profoundly learned.’ It was his attempt to defend the authenticity of the Epistles of Saint Ignatius against the literary attacks of Huguenot minister Jean Daille who argued that the epistles were false.
