Eugène Roger published an important description of the Holy Land in his 17th-century book ‘La Terre Sainte’. According to the Blackmer collection,

“Roger spent five years in Palestine and, in addition to an accurate description of the country, he gives an early and detailed description of the fourteen ‘nations’: Druzes and Maronites, as well as the Armenian, Georgian and other minorities of the religion, together with a vituperative account of Islam.”

Featured, are an impressive collection of 36 engravings of maps, plans, city views, and costumes. Atabey Travel notes that ‘the source of the interesting plates is unknown, but several are the same of those in the gouache album of Turkish costume after Bonnart”. Views and descriptions include those of Nineveh, Bethlehem, Mount of Olives, Arab astrology, Islamic mosques, and Ottoman sultans.
