1661 Digby Philosophy Magnetism Alchemy Medicine Theatrum Sympatheticum Magic
Kenelm Digby was a 17th-century English writer whose treatises on natural philosophy have made lasting impressions and contributions to Atomism. Digby believed in the concept of atoms making up the whole of the universe but practiced it in a more Aristotelian, philosophical way. Digby’s philosophies were published throughout the 17th-century including this 1661 printing of “Theatrum Sympatheticum”. It was in this book that “Digby first described his well-known weapon-salve, or ‘powder of sympathy.’”
This work offers the scientific and pseudo-scientific studies in magnetism and alchemy, pseudo medicine, and other topics of curiousity. While Digby’s “Oratio de pulvere sympathetico” is the most notable inclusion in this work, it includes writings from Goclenius, Helmont, Fludd, Kircher, Sennert, and still others.
