1657 History of Martyrs Martyrdom DUTCH Haemstede Utrecht Illustrated TORTURE
Adriaan van Haemstede was a 16th-century Dutch minister who is best-known for his book ‘History of Martyrs’. While serving in Antwerp, Haemstede wrote an overview of notable martyrs from the earliest times of the church through the Reformation. While the first edition was published in 1559, this 1657 printing is desirable because of the plethora of woodcut engravings by Savry. These illustrations depict gruesome torture scenes, beheadings, executions, and people being burned alive.
