Tommaso Campanella was a 16th-century Italian Dominican friar who is most-known for becoming involved in a conspiracy to overthrow the Calabrian rulers in Spain. While imprisoned for his involvement in the conspiracy, Campanella wrote numerous works including his famed ‘City of the Sun’ and this utopian perspective of a universal monarchy, ‘ De Monarchia Hispanica’. This book presents what the world would look like under a complete Christian utopian monarchy. It should be noted that portions of this book cover the European colonies founded in the New World! According to Sabin,

“two chapters treat of the other hemisphere, and of the New World and navigation… Campanella recommends castles and block-houses to be built at the mouths of all rivers and harbours in the New World ‘lest the English should break in, and bring in heresy”

This incredibly rare and desirable 1654 first English edition was published in London.
