1654 Fundamenta Medicinae Plempius Medicine Descartes Harvey Kepler Optics
Vopiscus Fortunatus Plemp was a 17th-century Dutch physician who closely followed the teachings and practices of William Harvey. As a close friend of Rene Descartes, Plempius corresponded frequently with the famous philosopher. In fact, the two were close enough that Descartes was frustrated with Plemp when Plemp published his ‘Fundamenta Medicinae’ without his approval. Though upon inspection, it was clear why Plemp did not seek Descartes’ consent. ‘Fundamenta Medicinae’ references Harvey’s blood circulation theories and outright rejected Descartes’ explanations as “lacking a good empirical basis”. (Alexandrescu).
Plemp also discusses the teachings of Johannes Kepler especially in context with spectacles and optics, as well as a separate section on ophthalmology.
