Arthur Wilson was a relatively unknown 17th-century historian and author, whose works were largely unpublished during his lifetime. One of his most important works was ‘History of Great Britain’ which, like most of his other works, was not published until after his death.

First published in 1653, this book was primarily written to cover the reign of James I of England and the state of Great Britain in the 16th-century. However, the book is mostly antagonistic toward the Stuart House and their influence, even noting his disdain for iconic political figures such as Francis Bacon. Lowndes even notes that

“this work is not very favorable toward the character of this monarch”.

Other notable topics covered in this work that cannot be left unmentioned include:

  • The Gunpowder Treason
    • Discovery, principal figures, trials, etc.
  • Walter Raleigh treason and imprisonment and beheading
