1651 On Papal Infallibility Lucius Cary Falkland Catholic Church Montagu Popes
Lucius Cary, a 17th-century English royalist politician, was the 2nd Viscount of Falkland. While he is most remembered for his military and political successes, he did write a curious essay entitled ‘Discourse of Infallibility’ – an account on infallibility in the Roman Catholic tradition. Falkland did not necessarily profess being Catholic or Protestant, but the work did contribute to a line of controversy. Falkland proposed that God would give aid and support to those that interpreted Scriptures correctly and would give pardon to those that missed it – a notion that requires no theological responsibility of the reader.
The 1651 edition of Falkland was published with Walter Montagu’s letter responding to Falkland, along with, of course, Falkland’s answer to Montagu.
