An important work on the English Civil War and the struggles between Protestants and Catholics under Charles I England.

In 1649, Thomas Bayly, a Royalist of the Church of England, defended Charles I against allegations that he had converted to Catholicism. Bayly’s defense was recorded in his book ‘Certamen Religiosum’ in which he reported the discussions between the late king and Henry Somerset. This book became highly controversial, so much so that it drew the attention of Protestants and Calvinists who had been loyal to Charles during his Protestant years. Christopher Cartwright responded to Bayly’s work with his own accusations in which he claimed Bayly ‘gave a false report favorable to the Catholic Church.’ (ESTC).

This 1651 edition of ‘Certament Religiosum’ features the Cartwright response, printed in 1652.
