A rare, first edition of Thomas Bayly’s ‘Herba Parietis’ – a fascinating romance novel written while Bayly was imprisoned. A few of his writings offended the English authorities which landed him in Newgate prison. This 1650 first edition, printed in folio, features an impressive full-page frontispiece engraving of Newgate Prison, where Bayly was held. This famous Holden edition is quite popular and extremely rare.

The story itself describes the Roman exiles in 6th-century northern Africa. It is curious though, the title has little to nothing to do with the content of this work, and is often thought to be titled as such to bring Bayly hope or good cheer while in prison.
