Francis Bacon was one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. Particularly known as a practitioner and advocate of the scientific method that depends largely on observation. He is considered the father of empiricism. His works were numerous, extensive, and were known to influence philosophers and scientists for generations.

“Augmentis Scientiarum” was written mostly to help classify philosophy and the sciences. Bacon also developed his theories on the relationship between science and theology. Originally printed in 1605, this fine Leiden reissue is a highly desirable printing, with a full-page, added engraved title. While the title page does not mention Elzevier, , ‘Adriani Wijngaerden’ was associated with the Elzevier house. (Willems 1672). “A well printed volume that joins Bacon and Elzevier and of which there are two previous editions [first printed in 1645]. Also, attractive copies” (Willems 1695).
