William Ames was an early 17^th-century English Puritan who is primarily known for fueling the controversies between Calvinist and Arminians. As a Calvinist himself, Ames published numerous pro-Calvinist works including his “Medulla Theologica” – an instructional manual on Calvinist doctrine. This 1641 edition was published in Amsterdam and this particular example contains in-text notes by previous owners.

It was with this business that he produced the very first Scottish newspaper outside of the major cities in Scotland. With this press he also published his own writings, including a discourse against the Acts of Union that took place in 1707 and “A History of the Late Rebellion (1718)”, both of which are still cited today.
